Vincentian priests house, Karen – Nairobi, Kenya
The Place – This project is a small and intimate courtyard design for a Vincentian priests house in Karen in Nairobi.
The Brief – We were asked to design a courtyard adjacent to an internal chapel in the centre of the house. The space needed to be calm and tranquil.
The Design – Our design was driven at creating shade within the space and allowing for the drainage of the space (which is open to the sky) to embody our approach. Eight trees are placed geometrically within the space with a central drain. Our stone drainage channels and the gentle sloping of the stone courtyard allow a flowing movement of the storm water as it moves throughout the space.
As with many of our project we enjoyed very much working with a local stone which was hand dressed into rectangular shapes and neatly placed directionally within the space to help draw the four main sections of the courtyard.
We are looking forward to the trees growing and shading the courtyard.
